According to the experts at design website Freshome, painted ceilings are one of the major trends in interior design right now. So we’re diving in with more details, ideas and inspiration for a painted ceiling in your home or office design.
A quick history of painted ceilings
People have painted the walls of their homes since… well, pretty much since the first homes were built. But painting ceilings was a sign of luxury and wealth. That’s why we find examples of painted ceilings in ancient Roman villas.
The most famous painted ceiling in the world is the Sistine Chapel, in Rome. It was painted by Michelangelo in the 16th century. Five centuries later, it is still considered one of the greatest works of art ever created.
The painted ceiling trend in 2019
Not everyone wants a hundred-and-thirty-foot religious fresco in their home. So what does the modern trend for painted ceilings look like?
Use your ceiling to continue a color theme, or add an accent color to the room. For example, you could paint the ceiling a soft pastel color, and the walls white. Or you could paint the ceiling the same color as your accent wall, to create a clever geometric effect.
Keep it simple – no patterns or illustrations! If you are using your ceiling as a fifth “accent wall”, you might also want to avoid elaborate light fittings. Remember, the paint is the main event in an accent wall, so don’t add too much detail.
What about colors? Bright pastels are popular this year, in blues, greens, and rose pinks. Try to avoid very dark or deep colors, because theymay make the room a tad gloomy.
