This district takes its name from the style of hotels and hundreds of buildings that occupy about thirty blocks, this style originated in Paris in 1900 and became popular between 1920 and 1939, influencing all the decorative arts such as architecture, design interior, graphic and industrial design, fashion, painting and sculpture among others.

The Art Décose considered an opulent style that resulted as a response to the austerity that caused the First World War. Simultaneously with growing economic depression and what was considered the approach of World War II, it had a very strong desire for escapism. People enjoyed the pleasures of life and art deco during the Jazz Age.

Art Deco is as fundamental elements geometric shapes such as cubes, circles, arches, spheres, rounded tips, triangles and straight lines and simple. In terms of design, this style is characterized by the use of tropical colors and pastel shades, moldings on the ceiling, parallel lines, and signs with neon lights.

On Collins Avenue in south and right by 13th Street you can find the Miami Beach Main Post Office (1300 Washington Avenue) and the Astor Hotel (956 Washington Avenue), on 10th Street to Collins Avenue you will observe the Essex House (1001 Collins Avenue) and The Hotel (801 Collins Avenue).

Miami definitely has the largest collection of Art Deco buildings, so the district was included in the National Register of Historic Places. Most of the buildings were restored and repainted in their original colors, it is impossible to find another place with the number of buildings in this style and especially in a perfect condition after about a hundred years.
